October 10: World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day - October 10th

Celebrated on the 10th of October, World Mental Health Day is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy. Awareness campaigns are carried out at the initiative of the Global Mental Health Institute, a global mental health organization. This day raises public awareness about mental health issues. On this day various aspects of mental health are discussed from the causes to prevention to the treatment.

According to the World Health Organization mental health is not just the absence of a mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

The day is an important celebration as mental, neurological and behavioral disorders are a cause for great socio-economical stress the world over. People suffering from these disorders are subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and higher death rates.

Strategies used to improve the mental well-being of the individual, and the community at large, include encouragement of resources and skills of the individual and improvement in the socio-economic environment.

At Sangath we strive to build a healthy individual from the start. Our various programs are designed to ensure that an individual’s mental health is sound, right through his or her life, thus improving the wellbeing of the whole community……
